• Ancona, Italy, September 21, 2017. Mole Vanvitelliana. The Mole houses artworks saved from the areas affected by the Marche earthquake of August 24, 2016. In the image: a wooden half-bust of saints and religious men taken from the Church of San Francesco at Arquata del Tronto; a bell from the Church of Santa Maria Castellare in Nocelleto and the fresco Immacolata con coppia di Angeli from the Palazzo Comunale di Ussita (Macerata). The recovered works were subject to extreme deterioration due to the earthquake, being buried under collapsed churches and to changes in atmospheric conditions. In the warehouse in Ancona, each work is archived carefully by describing the conservation conditions and cataloguing the link with the place of origin, to which it will be returned at the end of the restoration process.
Ancona, Italia, 21 Settembre 2017. Mole Vanvitelliana.

 • Milan, Italy 11 June 2019. Madonna con Bambino (1490-99) painted by Francesco Galli (otherwise known as Francesco Napoletano, a Leonardo da Vinci-style painter), in the Pinacoteca di Brera, Milan. The work was recently subjected to a restoration and 'aesthetic revision' intervention curated by Dr. Paola Borghese. It had already been subjected to various ‘interventions' in the past, of which the only-documented ones date back to 1883, when it first entered the Picture Gallery. The painting presented a series of uneven coatings of paints and adhesives that altered the reading of the image. A calibrated intervention was then carried out to remove the non-original materials with particular care in respect of the finished surface - a very delicate process in “Leonardeschi” - composed of very light glazes made mainly with very fluid lacquers and pigments.
Milano, Italia 11 giugno 2019.

The restoration team of the Pinacoteca (which also includes Andrea Carini, Sofia Incarbone and Ilaria Negri), has been working since 2003 inside a large 'glass case’ positioned within the public part of the museum, under the eyes of the visitors, thanks to the initiative called 'transparent restoration'. In the photograph, Paola Borghese is portrayed in front of the painting Madonna con Bambino (1490-99) painted by Francesco Galli (otherwise known as Francesco Napoletano, Leonardo da Vinci-style painter. This is a work of which Dr. Borghese curated the conservation and restoration in view of the exhibition of the work of Leonardo-influenced painters that will be held in November 2019 at the Poldi Pezzoli Museum in Milan.
Elena Zichichi, 20 years old from Palermo, in her first year of studies at the Istituto Superiore per la Conservazione ed il Restauro in Matera, engaged in the restoration of the Cathedral's facade, at the end of her working day. Speaking of her education as a restorer, Elena says: “«It is a beautiful course that enables you to look at the work both from an aesthetic and a scientific point of view and it shapes you as an artisan, scientist and art historian. Now I look differently at the artwork I see. And the experience on the restoration site is beautiful because you work closely with different figures: the worker, the plumber, the archaeologist, the art historian».
Pisa, Italia, 25 Settembre 2017.

 • Rome, Italy, March 15th, 2018. A view on the open restoration site set up by the Istuituto Superiore per la Conservazione ed il Restauro of Rome inside the former church of Santa Marta al Collegio Romano and in the space of the former Coro delle Monache. In the photo, the restorers Ilaria Barbetti e Aspasia Formichetti are working on the precious Roman fragments, (about 7,000), connected with the great thermal system of a villa, which were discovered during the excavation conducted by the Università di Tor Vergata. The theme of the reconstruction of those fragments has been present in the Istuituto Superiore per la Conservazione ed il Restauro since the early years of its foundation and saw a moment of particular involvement with the restoration of the paintings of the collapsed vaults of San Francesco in Assisi in the 1997 earthquake.
• Matera, January 18, 2019. The Crypt of Sant'Eligio, inside the Convincio di Sant'Antonio, a rupestrian complex in the Casalnuovo district composed of four rock churches built between the twelfth and thirteenth centuries. Through a portal with an ogee arch, the courtyard overlooks the rock areas dedicated to San Primo, Sant'Eligio (or dell'Annunziata), San Donato and Sant'Antonio Abate. The Convicinio di Sant'Antonio is the city’s most important exterior work site for the students of the Matera SAF. Their work on the site took place in 2017. «It was a ‘pilot ‘ site», says Camilla Mauri, a 4th year student. «We did some tests in order to find a suitable methodology to intervene on the frescoes. The interventions were in 2 of the 4 Churches: San Donato and Sant'Eligio. Tests of consolidation, cleaning and reinstatement were done, but only on some parts. Data loggers were also installed to detect temperature, humidity and wind. Although we cannot eliminate external agents, we can put ‘limits’ to preserve the works, without isolating them, since that would create further damage ».
